The ultimate car accident checklist

Nobody wants to be involved in a car accident, but sometimes no matter how careful we are on the roads, accidents might still happen whether we like it or not.  So we created a checklist in case you caught yourself in an accident and before you go to Broomfield auto mechanic

  • Keep Calm

Don’t lose your cool. Keeping calm and having a cool head will make it easier to think and deal with the accident and its aftermath.

  • Check for Injuries

Check yourself and the passengers for any visible injuries. Call 911 immediately or ask someone else if anyone has been hurt. If seriously injured, don’t try to move until help can get to you.

  • Pull your car over to one side

You should clear the roadway if possible. You can pull your car over to the shoulder if you can so that it’s out of the way of approaching traffic. If an accident happens at night, make sure you turn your car’s hazard lights so that other vehicles can see you. In cases where you cant move your vehicle, get yourself and anyone else involved in the accident to a safe spot away from the road.  It is also advisable to keep an emergency kit that includes flares or reflective triangles that can come in handy for directing traffic around an accident.

  • Check for damages in vehicles

If you are not injured and are able to assess the damage to the vehicles, take the time to do that. As much as possible, take pictures showing the position of the cars and of the damage to each car. If you can’t take pictures, consider drawing a diagram to note how the accident occurred while it is still fresh in your memory.

  • Report it to the authorities

Call law enforcement to the scene especially if the accident is a serious one. The police can create a report of the accident which you can request a copy of for insurance purposes.

  • Exchange information with the other driver

Try to get useful information from the other driver including their phone number, names, and insurance information.

  • Decide whether to file an insurance claim

If you are planning to file a claim, get in touch with your insurance company as soon as possible after the accident. Car insurance is there to protect you financially if ever got involved in an accident and you are required to have minimum amounts of bodily injury and property damage liability coverage.
